We moved into the Village by the Arboretum community two and a half years ago and found it to be like a beehive – quiet on the outside, extremely active and vibrant with sweet possibilities on the inside. The people are welcoming, friendly, and helpful. This is a place where neighbours help neighbours. We all have moved in from somewhere and want to enjoy an engaging and relaxing retirement. Over 80 resident-initiated and mostly resident-run activities provide meaningful, diversified involvement for our residents’ enjoyment should they choose to join and we are always open to new initiatives.

The Village is very well maintained. While the houses are the responsibility of the owner, our landscaping crews take care of our lawns and gardens in the summer and snow removal in the winter. Our very attractive and functional Activity Center features a well-equipped exercise center, a swimming pool, card rooms, craft rooms, a rehearsal hall, and a large gym/auditorium complete with professional sound and lighting capabilities. Outside the Centre are tennis and bocce ball courts, horseshoe pits, a putting green and an exquisite Zen garden complete with serene fountains. For us, the VBA has become an ideal home to round out our retirement and long-term dreams.

We chose to make our home in the Village by the Arboretum for a number of reasons — the location and the amenities available in Guelph and of course the community's relationship with the University all played a part. However, the clincher was the active involvement of the Residents’ Association with the property management company in the day to day running of the Village. Balancing resident and property management expectations with budget realities and cost control takes a special skill, and the on-site Executive Director works closely with the Residents’ Association on day to day issues and longer term planning and budgets.

For peace, serenity, security and beautiful surroundings you need look no further than the Village by the Arboretum in Guelph. This community has been my home since 2000 and I am so very glad that I moved here. The homes are lovely and sit in a park-like setting. Since there are no fences, everyone’s back yard is a vista of groomed lawns, gardens and mature trees. The superb landscaping is kept up magically by our maintenance crew. Our village consists of about 1000 people in 590 homes. I think I know about half, and have formed some very close friendships. The activities of the village are organized and run by the residents themselves and there are over 80 interest groups. That is how I have met so many of my interesting neighbours. The fabulous recreation centre hosts concerts, plays, banquets, dances, parties and games. All this is within two to three minutes of your home.

Since the 100-acre complex is fenced, with two gates, there is no through traffic from the city. Therefore the ambience is quiet and green. You will hear birdsong, hourly chimes from the clock tower, the soft thwack of tennis balls and clicking bocce balls, the conversation of your neighbours on the sidewalk and the rare barking of a dog.

Residents may choose to be active in our groups all day, every day or totally inactive, or some happy point along that spectrum. In fact, you may still be working or may have moved to part-time work as I did for my first six years here. We are eleven kilometers from the 401 and thus we have easy access to other cities in southern Ontario, to the Toronto airport, and even to cottage country. The village itself is across the road from the University of Guelph and is close to many amenities. My own contentment here arises primarily from the sociability and sense of community coupled with the beautiful atmosphere.

Come and join me!

We heard of the wonderful VBA through relatives and moved here from Calgary, Alberta. It was a perfect decision for us and we have thoroughly enjoyed the last five years participating in the many available Activity Groups and on Village committees. The residents are like family, are close knit and have a wide variety of interesting backgrounds. Life for us in the Village, with it's beautiful Village Centre,is very busy, interesting, and enjoyable every day. A perfect retirement community.
